Stop selling to Amazon!

Abrams: Small Businesses Should “Stop Selling” On Amazon, Other Online Marketplaces

In her column for USA Today (8/11), Rhonda Abrams said small businesses “should stop selling through Amazon and other online platforms.” Although intermediary platforms such as the online marketplace run by Amazon provide numerous benefits to consumers, they “are also a trap for small businesses.” Among the pitfalls of selling on online marketplaces are that they: “own the customer;” “take a high percent of the sales price;” “require you to follow their rules, which can be costly;” and “compete against you.” Abrams said, “If you can be successful without using one of these platforms to reach enough customers, don’t use them. You’ll be far more profitable without a platform.” The article outlines ways in which sellers can cultivate their own customer base outside an online marketplace.
